Actor Yoo Ji-tae has spoken candidly about a difficult chapter from his childhood, sharing that incorrect medication use led to significant weight gain at a very young age. His remarks have renewed public attention on the potential side effects of steroid-based drugs.
“My Body Changed Dramatically”
On the January 5 episode of the YouTube talk show Zzanhanhyung Shin Dong-yup, Yoo Ji-tae revealed that he was prescribed medication containing steroids while being treated for a skin condition during elementary school.

“I took a huge amount of steroid-based medicine,” he said. “After that, my body really changed. I became noticeably bigger.” Yoo Ji-tae shared that his weight reached 65 kilograms while he was still in elementary school, a period he described as physically and emotionally challenging. He added that photos of his round-faced childhood appearance still circulating online were taken during that time.
Understanding Steroid Side Effects
Steroid medications, which Yoo Ji-tae referenced, are commonly used in medical settings to treat conditions such as atopic dermatitis, suppress immune reactions after organ transplants, and support cancer treatment. When used properly and for short periods, they are known for their strong anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressing effects.
However, experts caution that excessive or prolonged use can lead to a range of side effects. According to information shared by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, steroids are classified as corticosteroids, which reduce inflammation and control immune responses but require careful dosage management.
Commonly Reported Risks
Among the most well-known side effects are rapid weight gain and “moon face,” a condition where the face becomes round and swollen. Other potential issues include stomach discomfort, heartburn, reduced calcium absorption that may lead to osteoporosis, and—when used in topical form—skin irritation or redness.
Health authorities stress that steroids should only be used under medical supervision, following strict guidelines on dosage and duration. Repeated misuse can cause drug resistance, reducing effectiveness and potentially leading patients to seek stronger medications in a harmful cycle.
A Personal Story With a Broader Message
Yoo Ji-tae’s story resonated with viewers not only because of its honesty, but also because it highlights the importance of responsible medication use—especially in children. By sharing his experience, the actor offered a rare glimpse into a vulnerable moment from his past, turning a personal struggle into a reminder of why careful medical guidance matters.
His candid reflection added depth to the conversation on the show, showing that even well-known figures have faced long-lasting consequences from childhood health issues—and that awareness can help prevent similar experiences for others.
