Singer, producer, and global K-pop icon G-Dragon will be awarded the Ok-Gwan (Jade) Order of Cultural Merit, one of South Korea’s highest distinctions granted to artists who have made outstanding contributions to national culture and the arts.

The announcement comes ahead of the 2025 Korea Popular Culture & Arts Awards, which will be held on October 23 at the National Theater of Korea. Organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency, the ceremony will honor 31 artists and creators across music, film, acting, and performance.
This year’s recipients of the Cultural Merit include the late comedian Jeon Yoo-seong, veteran actress Kim Hae-sook, actors Lee Byung-hun and Jung Dong-hwan, and voice actor Bae Han-seong. Among them, G-Dragon stands out as the only pop musician and the first idol artist to ever receive the Jade Crown class.
Debuting with BIGBANG in 2006, G-Dragon real name Kwon Ji-yong has spent nearly two decades redefining K-pop through innovation and artistry. As a rapper, songwriter, and producer, he helped globalize Korean music and set new standards for creativity and style. His influence extended beyond the stage into fashion, art, and philanthropy, often bridging mainstream and avant-garde culture.
G-Dragon’s selection reflects not only his musical achievements but also his ongoing contributions as a cultural ambassador. In 2025, he was appointed as an official ambassador for the APEC Summit in Gyeongju, becoming one of the few Korean artists to represent national culture at a global economic forum.
Throughout his career, G-Dragon has released several critically acclaimed albums such as Heartbreaker, Coup d’État, and Kwon Ji Yong, each shaping the sound and identity of a generation. His 2025 album Übermensch and its ongoing world tour reaffirmed his status as a visionary capable of merging sound, art, and philosophy.
The honor places him alongside past recipients like BTS, who received the Flower Crown Cultural Merit in 2018, marking a new chapter in how idol artists are recognized for their lasting cultural impact.
As South Korea continues to embrace pop culture as part of its global identity, G-Dragon’s achievement stands as both a personal milestone and a national moment—a recognition of how far Korean music and creativity have come, and how much further they can go.
Editor’s Insight
The awarding of the Ok-Gwan (Jade) Order of Cultural Merit to G-Dragon (Kwon Ji-yong) represents a historic shift in how the South Korean government categorizes “Idol” artistry. While groups like BTS previously received the Hwa-Gwan (Flower) Merit, G-Dragon’s elevation to the Jade Crown class—typically reserved for veteran actors and legendary masters—solidifies his Topical Authority not just as a pop star, but as a “National Treasure.” In 2026, the distinction between “Idol” and “Auteur” has officially dissolved, with G-Dragon serving as the primary architect of this new cultural hierarchy.
From a strategic perspective, his appointment as the APEC Summit Ambassador in Gyeongju alongside this Merit is a masterclass in “Diplomatic Branding.” By merging the avant-garde philosophy of his Übermensch album with the rigid formality of a global economic forum, South Korea is utilizing G-Dragon’s “cool factor” to modernize its national identity. This isn’t just about music; it’s about Soft Power Institutionalization, where a hip-hop icon becomes the face of high-level international policy.
Do you think G-Dragon being the first individual idol to reach the “Jade” class sets an impossible standard for the next generation, or has he finally opened the door for idols to be treated as serious “Fine Artists”?
