NewJeans Confirm Return to ADOR Can the Group Rebuild Its Identity in 2025?

NewJeans is finally returning but the K-pop landscape they once dominated is no longer the same. After nearly a year of legal conflict and uncertainty, the group has confirmed plans to resume activities under ADOR. As excitement and concern rise simultaneously, fans and the industry are asking one question: Can NewJeans be NewJeans again?

A Group That Changed K-pop and Then Suddenly Stopped

From their debut hit Attention to global favorites like Hype Boy, ETA, and How Sweet, NewJeans reshaped fourth-generation K-pop with a fresh visual identity and addictive easy-listening sound. Their 2024 track Supernatural even became the only K-pop entry on The New York Times “Songs of the Year” list.

But in late November last year, NewJeans shocked the industry by announcing they would terminate their exclusive contracts with ADOR. The move followed escalating tension between the members, the agency, and parent company HYBE — a dispute that ultimately led to the resignation of former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin, long considered the creative architect of NewJeans’ identity.

After losing the legal battle, the members have chosen to return to ADOR, renewing both anticipation and concern about their next chapter.

Finding the ‘Golden Point’ of NewJeans 2.0

One day after the group’s decision, Min Hee-jin released a brief statement expressing support: she would “cheer for them from afar.” But her absence marks an undeniable turning point. Many of the creative forces behind NewJeans’ signature sound — including 250 of BANA (Beasts and Natives Alike) are also unlikely to return. That means the group must rebuild without the original team responsible for shaping their iconic aesthetic.

Industry observers agree that ADOR will not overhaul NewJeans’ formula abruptly. Their minimalist visuals and refreshing sonic palette are now deeply tied to the brand, and changing them drastically could risk alienating fans. Meanwhile, their year-long absence allowed many girl groups to adopt “NewJeans-like” concepts, further shifting the competitive landscape.

Music critic Lim Hee-yoon notes: “If NewJeans returns with the same style, they risk being seen as an imitation of themselves. But if they change too much, people may say, ‘This isn’t NewJeans.’ Their challenge is to find a golden point — something familiar, but evolved.” Despite internal turmoil, ADOR reportedly continued working on the group’s first full-length album throughout the dispute, even contacting Grammy-winning global producers. Critics say that if the members and the agency present high-quality music with a clear vision, fans are more than ready to welcome them back.

Rebuilding the NewJeans Brand

Although all five members have expressed their intention to return, the process hasn’t been completely smooth. ADOR’s announcement emphasized that discussions were first held with Hyein and Haerin — a detail that drew attention because Hyein’s father reportedly opposed the contract termination early on. Meanwhile, Minji, Hanni, and Danielle conveyed their positions later through legal representatives. ADOR says it is “carefully confirming” each member’s intentions and will hold individual meetings.

Industry insiders also point to the cautionary example of FIFTY FIFTY. After their dispute was dismissed, only Keena returned to her agency; the rest faced contract termination and major lawsuits. Some believe NewJeans’ decision to return reflects a similar realization: extended legal battles can destroy momentum.

There is also quiet speculation that NewJeans may resume activities as a partial lineup, focusing on the two members who signaled their return first. However, most experts agree that full-member activities are essential to restoring the group’s brand power. As one music industry official explained: “The comeback’s impact will differ dramatically depending on whether all five return. Both ADOR and the members know this very well.”

Can NewJeans Be “NewJeans” Again?

The group that once defined a generation now faces a rare challenge in K-pop: rebuilding their identity in real time. Their comeback carries enormous weight — not only for fans but for an industry reshaped by their influence.

If NewJeans can blend their original charm with a renewed creative direction, their return could become one of the defining K-pop moments of the decade. But how they balance continuity and reinvention will determine whether they truly enter a “NEW进s” era, or remain a symbol of what once changed K-pop.
