Top actor Jo Jin-woong, known for powerful roles in Signal, A Hard Day, and The Policeman’s Lineage, has long been admired for his charismatic “detective” image. But behind the respected actor is a lesser-known past that he has rarely spoken about.
Recently, interest in Jo’s early life surged after Dispatch reported new details about his teenage years — a time he reportedly struggled, made serious mistakes, and later worked to rebuild his life.
A hidden teenage past
According to multiple accounts from former acquaintances, Jo Jin-woong (born Jo Won-joon) had a difficult adolescence. Sources say he fell into the wrong crowd during high school and became involved in several incidents that eventually led to juvenile protective measures. Because of this, Jo changed schools more than once and later chose not to publicly discuss that period of his life.

A new start and a new name
After completing his time at a juvenile facility, Jo returned to Busan, enrolled in Kyungsung University’s Theater and Film Department, and decided to start over. As he began acting professionally, he made a symbolic decision:
he stopped using his birth name and began using his father’s name, “Jo Jin-woong,” hoping for a clean slate as he transitioned from theater to film.
Early adulthood challenges
Reports also mention two incidents from his twenties — a physical altercation during his theater days and a DUI case — both occurring before he became a well-known actor. These events did not heavily surface at the time, as Jo had not yet gained public fame.
Why the past resurfaced now
Interest reignited after Jo Jin-woong participated in several national commemorative events this year, reading the Pledge of Allegiance and appearing in historical programs honoring independence activists. Some individuals who knew him in his youth felt conflicted seeing him in these symbolic roles, leading to renewed attention on his early life.
