A Story Driven by Power, Desire, and Conflict

Set against the turbulent yet ambitious backdrop of 1970s South Korea, Made in Korea follows Baek Gi-tae (Hyun Bin), a calculating Central Intelligence Agency director who seeks wealth and power by turning the nation itself into a profit model. Standing in his way is prosecutor Jang Geon-young (played by Jung Woo-sung), whose relentless pursuit pushes Gi-tae toward the edge.

With each new episode, Hyun Bin’s portrayal of Baek Gi-tae grows increasingly complex—revealing a man who balances instinct and strategy, ambition and restraint.

Tense Rivalry With Jung Woo-sung

The central axis of the series lies in the icy confrontation between Baek Gi-tae and Jang Geon-young. Their relationship is defined by suspicion and psychological warfare, with each man constantly anticipating the other’s next move. Hyun Bin’s restrained performance amplifies the tension, turning every shared scene into a silent battle of wills.

A Dangerous Spark With Jo Yeo-jeong

A different dynamic emerges with the introduction of Jo Yeo-jeong as Geum-ji, a mysterious woman closely watched by the elite. In her scenes with Gi-tae, calculation meets temptation. Hyun Bin subtly shifts his tone and gaze—suggesting both control and possibility—creating a relationship that acts as a catalyst for Gi-tae’s deepening desires and accelerating the plot’s pace.

Strategic Alliance With Won Ji-an

Gi-tae’s interactions with Ikeda Yuki, portrayed by Won Ji-an, take yet another direction. United by ambition, the two form a strategic alliance that hovers between trust and suspicion. Their partnership introduces a quieter but persistent tension, leaving viewers questioning how long their interests will truly align.

Family Ties and Expanding Power Circles

The relational web widens further through Gi-tae’s younger brother Baek Gi-hyeon, played by Woo Do-hwan, as well as figures like Hwang Guk-pyeong (Park Yong-woo), Cheon Seok-jung (Jung Sung-il), and Pyo Hak-su (Noh Jae-won). Each connection adds another layer to Gi-tae’s world—tightening the net of power, loyalty, and betrayal around him.

Hyun Bin’s Most Nuanced Performance Yet

What sets Made in Korea apart is Hyun Bin’s precision in expressing emotional “temperature.” Through subtle changes in posture, eye contact, and pacing, he differentiates Gi-tae’s relationships—never repeating the same emotional rhythm twice. This careful modulation elevates Baek Gi-tae beyond a simple power-hungry figure into a fully realized character shaped by both ambition and fracture.

As the ambitions of each character begin to collide in earnest, Made in Korea continues to build intensity with every episode. Viewers are left watching closely—wondering what choices Baek Gi-tae will make next, and what cost his pursuit of power will ultimately demand.

Made in Korea is available exclusively on Disney+, with Episode 5 premiering on January 7 and Episode 6 on January 14.
