“No Tail to Tell” to Open SBS’s 2026 Lineup With a Bold Fantasy Romance Twist

After a long wait, SBS’s highly anticipated fantasy romance No Tail to Tell is finally set to meet viewers.

Premiering on January 16, No Tail to Tell is a Friday–Saturday drama that blends fantasy and romantic comedy with a bold twist. The story follows an MZ-generation gumiho who has no desire to become human, and an overly self-absorbed man whose life collides with hers in a chaotic yet heartfelt journey of mutual salvation. Set within a newly imagined gumiho universe, the drama promises a playful narrative that moves freely between reality and fantasy.

A Buzz-Worthy Start to SBS’s 2026 Drama Lineup

As the opening title in SBS’s 2026 drama slate, No Tail to Tell has been drawing attention even before its premiere. According to Good Data Corporation’s FUNdex rankings, the series entered the Top 10 most buzzed-about TV dramas for two consecutive weeks—late December and early January—despite not having aired yet. With just days left until its first episode, anticipation continues to build.

To address growing curiosity, director Kim Jung-kwon and writers Park Chan-young and Jo Ah-young shared insights into the drama’s concept and creative direction.

Reversing the Gumiho Myth

Director Kim explained that what drew him to the project was its refreshing approach to familiar folklore. Rather than retelling a conventional gumiho story, No Tail to Tell flips expectations on their head. The female lead, Eun-ho, portrayed by Kim Hye-yoon, is a mythical being who openly resists the idea of becoming human.

Though rooted in legend, Eun-ho is written as a surprisingly grounded and relatable character—someone who exists outside social norms yet mirrors the emotional struggles of modern youth.

The writers added that the drama reflects the pressure many young people feel when facing society’s rigid expectations about careers, marriage, and success. Unlike most, Eun-ho boldly questions these standards, refusing to accept them simply because they are considered “normal.” While her attitude may seem reckless at times, the creators believe her carefree defiance can also feel comforting—and even encouraging—to viewers.

Fantasy Meets Rom-Com, With Sincerity at the Core

Often compared to SBS’s recent fantasy hits, No Tail to Tell is being positioned as the network’s next signature K-fantasy romance. Director Kim described the series as a crossover between rom-com and fantasy, calling it an ambitious creative challenge.

Reflecting on his earlier work, including the fantasy melodrama Ditto, he emphasized that sincerity remains the most important element. Even the most unbelievable story, he explained, can feel real when grounded in honest performances.

Kim Hye-yoon and Lomon: A Pairing That Brings Energy

That sincerity comes to life through the drama’s leads. Kim Hye-yoon stars opposite Lomon, who plays Kang Si-yeol. Director Kim praised the casting as a dynamic combination that brings immediate vitality to the project.

He described Kim Hye-yoon’s greatest strength as her emotional authenticity, noting that few actors perform with such genuine feeling. As for Lomon, he highlighted the actor’s natural purity, likening him to a blank canvas that inspires creative ambition. According to the director, the two share a level of on-screen harmony that makes it feel as though they are always moving in the same emotional direction.

A Story That Reflects Back on the Viewer

In closing, Director Kim expressed his hope that No Tail to Tell will be more than just a fantasy about changing fate. Instead, he envisions it as a story that encourages viewers to reflect on their own lives by watching someone who lives by entirely different rules.

No Tail to Tell premieres January 16 on SBS and aims to deliver laughter, warmth, and quiet introspection through its imaginative world and emotionally grounded storytelling.
