“Flexibility Is Their Greatest Strength”: KATSEYE Redefines Localized K-Pop for North America

Global girl group KATSEYE is emerging as one of the clearest success stories of K-pop’s next phase: localization without losing identity. Backed by HYBE and Geffen Records, the group is proving that flexibility culturally, musically, and structurally can be a powerful advantage in the global market.

In a recent written interview, In Jung-hyun, Executive Creative Producer at HYBE x Geffen (HXG), described KATSEYE’s defining trait in one word: flexibility. “Their diversity was both our biggest challenge and our biggest source of inspiration,” he explained. “From the very beginning, the results felt unfamiliar but not uncomfortable. They felt fresh.”

A Different Kind of K-Pop Group

KATSEYE debuted in June 2024 following a joint global audition project between HYBE and Geffen Records. From its inception, the group was designed to dismantle traditional boundaries. The six members include one Korean, three Americans, one Filipino-American, and one Swiss-Italian dual national, forming a lineup that reflects the multicultural reality of North America.

This diversity is not cosmetic. Some members have openly shared aspects of their personal identities, including sexual orientation, signaling a level of openness rarely seen in traditional idol groups. Their participation in global campaigns such as GAP’s Better in Denim further emphasized individuality over uniformity, with each member styled distinctly rather than identically.

Built for the Local Market, Powered by K-Pop Systems

According to In Jung-hyun, KATSEYE was made possible by casting without regional, racial, or cultural barriers, combined with a training system tailored to local sensibilities. “Musically, we aimed for pop that feels immediately accessible to local listeners,” he said. “At the same time, performances are rooted in globally loved K-pop styles.”

Unlike earlier Western pop groups, KATSEYE was never built around a proven formula. “There hasn’t been a U.S. based group since the 2010s that developed a truly global fandom,” In noted. “This project didn’t start with a guaranteed path to success. That uncertainty was part of the excitement.”

Results That Exceeded Expectations

The gamble paid off. KATSEYE currently has three songs simultaneously charting on Billboard’s Hot 100 a rare achievement even among established global acts. Their latest single ‘Internet Girl’ debuted at No. 29, while ‘Gabriela’ (No. 21) and ‘Gnarly’ (No. 88) continue to show strong longevity. The group has also earned two Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist, underscoring their impact beyond charts.

The Future of Localized K-Pop

In Jung-hyun credits the success to HYBE’s “multi home, multi genre” strategy. “K-pop’s production system is optimized for artist development and content quality,” he said. “When applied thoughtfully to different regions, it can create artists who feel truly local and globally resonant.”
