Reports suggesting that BTS may hold a free, full group comeback performance at Gwanghwamun Square have drawn widespread attention, with the group’s agency confirming that discussions are currently underway but emphasizing that no final decision has been made.

On January 19, BigHit Music, a subsidiary of HYBE, responded to inquiries regarding the reported performance, stating, “The matter is currently under discussion. Once the venue and schedule are finalized, we will provide an official announcement.” The agency’s statement stopped short of confirming specific details, underscoring that plans remain subject to change.

Reports Spark Anticipation, Agency Urges Caution

Earlier in the day, reports circulated claiming that BTS was preparing to stage its first full-group performance following their comeback at Gwanghwamun Square on March 20, and that the event would be held free of charge. The news quickly spread among fans, given the symbolic and historical significance of the location.

According to industry sources, HYBE has reportedly applied for permission to use multiple areas in central Seoul, including Gwanghwamun Square and surrounding landmarks such as Gyeongbokgung and Sungnyemun. Consultations are said to be ongoing with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, police authorities, and the Cultural Heritage Administration to assess feasibility, crowd control, and cultural preservation concerns.

A review related to venue usage is scheduled to take place during a Cultural Heritage Committee meeting on January 20 at 2 p.m., adding to expectations that more clarity may emerge in the coming days.

A Symbolic Stage for a Long-Awaited Return

If confirmed, a free performance at Gwanghwamun would carry strong symbolic weight. Located at the heart of Seoul, the square has historically served as a site for major national events and public gatherings. For BTS, whose career has often intersected with cultural representation and global visibility, the venue would mark a meaningful stage for reconnecting with the public following a lengthy hiatus.

All seven members completed their mandatory military service last year, paving the way for a long-anticipated full-group return. Fans have closely followed signs of reunion activity, particularly since the group has largely focused on solo projects in recent years.

Comeback Album Already Confirmed

What has been officially confirmed is BTS’s comeback date. The group is set to release a new full-length album titled ‘ARIRANG’ on March 20, marking their first group album since completing military service.

Earlier this month, BTS drew attention with a large scale promotional display near Gwanghwamun, where the album logo, release date, and the group’s name were featured on the central staircase of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. The installation fueled speculation about a potential connection between the album and the historic district.

Waiting for Official Confirmation

While excitement continues to build, BigHit Music has urged fans and the public to wait for formal confirmation regarding any performance plans. Until official details are released, the possibility of a free Gwanghwamun concert remains a proposal under review rather than a finalized event.
