The suspect accused of breaking into singer and actress Nana’s home and threatening her with a weapon appeared in court for the first time, denying most of the prosecution’s charges.
On January 20, the Uijeongbu District Court’s Namyangju branch held the first hearing for a 34 year old man, identified as Kim, who has been indicted on charges of robbery and bodily injury.
According to JTBC, Kim and his legal team rejected the indictment and claimed that he was instead assaulted by Nana during the incident.
Incident Details and Injury Reports
The suspect is accused of entering Nana’s residence in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, on November 15 last year at around 6 PM. Prosecutors state that Kim threatened Nana and her mother with a weapon and demanded valuables.
During the confrontation, both Nana and her mother reportedly suffered serious injuries. Medical reports submitted to the court indicated Nana sustained injuries requiring 33 days of treatment, while her mother required 31 days. The robbery attempt ultimately failed due to their resistance.
Suspect Claims Theft, Not Robbery
In court, Kim insisted that he believed the house was empty and entered only with the intention to steal. He denied carrying a weapon and claimed that the knife involved belonged to the victims.
His legal team further argued that Kim was assaulted during the struggle and that the injuries reported by Nana were defensive wounds rather than evidence of an intentional attack.
Presiding Judge Kim Guk Sik questioned the credibility of the claim, asking whether anyone would remain calm if an intruder entered their home in such a manner.
Forensic Requests and Witness Selection
The defense requested fingerprint analysis of the knife and its case by the National Forensic Service. They also challenged the validity of the injury diagnosis and attempted to call medical staff as witnesses.
However, the court stated that verbal testimony alone would not be sufficient as objective evidence and asked the defense to reconsider its approach.
Nana and her mother have been officially selected as witnesses for the next hearing.
Self Defense Ruling and Next Trial Date
Police previously ruled that Nana and her mother acted in self defense after injuring the suspect’s jaw while restraining him. A counter complaint filed by the suspect accusing them of attempted murder was dismissed earlier this month.
The next trial is scheduled to take place on March 10 at the same court.
