Administered by the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education, GKS is the country’s flagship scholarship program for international students and remains the largest fully funded opportunity offered by the Korean government. Since its launch in 1967, the program has expanded dramatically, supporting thousands of students from around the world each year while helping Korean universities strengthen their international networks.
Unlike many scholarships that only reduce tuition, GKS provides a comprehensive support package that typically includes airfare, full tuition, a monthly living allowance, medical insurance and, for many degree programs, a year of Korean language training before students begin their academic studies.
What also makes GKS unique is its reach. Students can apply to dozens of participating universities across the country rather than being limited to a single institution, allowing applicants to choose programs ranging from engineering and medicine to journalism, business, international relations and the arts.

2. POSCO TJ Park Foundation Scholarship: Investing in Asia’s future leaders
While GKS accepts applicants from around the world, the POSCO TJ Park Foundation Scholarship focuses specifically on developing future leaders from Asia.
Created by one of Korea’s largest industrial foundations, the program supports outstanding master’s and doctoral students who plan to study at Korean universities. Rather than emphasizing only academic achievement, the foundation also looks for applicants with leadership potential and the ability to contribute to the development of their home countries after graduation.
Recipients receive support for tuition, living expenses, settlement assistance after arriving in Korea and additional awards for outstanding language achievement. The scholarship covers nearly every academic discipline except MBA programs, making it one of the most flexible privately funded opportunities available for graduate students.
Because the number of awards is relatively limited compared with GKS, the competition is particularly strong among applicants from across Asia.
3. University Merit Scholarships: Opportunities that thousands of students overlook
Many prospective students assume that government scholarships are the only realistic way to study in Korea without paying full tuition.
In reality, some of the country’s largest financial support programs are operated directly by universities themselves.
According to Study in Korea, most Korean universities offer merit-based scholarships that can cover anywhere from 30 percent to 100 percent of tuition, while some graduate schools also provide dormitory support and additional living assistance for outstanding international students.
Unlike GKS, these scholarships are awarded by individual institutions, meaning the eligibility requirements, academic criteria and application procedures vary considerably from one university to another.
Some universities automatically evaluate admitted international students for scholarships without requiring a separate application, while others require additional documents or interviews. In many cases, students can also continue receiving financial support after enrollment by maintaining a strong GPA.
Because every university designs its own system, these scholarships are often less well known internationally even though they support thousands of foreign students every year.

The growing popularity of Korean scholarships reflects a broader transformation in the country’s higher education strategy.
Universities are investing heavily in English-taught programs, international research collaborations and global recruitment as they compete to attract talented students from around the world.
