ATEEZ’s San has returned with a fashion editorial that captures two sides fans know well: the warm, playful personality seen away from the stage and the commanding presence that takes over once the cameras begin rolling.
Dazed Korea unveiled the images on September 4 as part of its fall edition. Wearing pieces from Dolce & Gabbana, San moves through denim, warm brown layers, sharp tailoring and dramatic all-black looks without losing the intensity that makes each photograph immediately recognizable as his.
One image shows him seated casually in a denim jacket and wide-leg pants. In another, he winks at the camera while wearing a brown jacket, briefly replacing the editorial’s serious mood with something more mischievous.
The atmosphere changes dramatically when San appears in a black suit with wet-look hair. His expression becomes colder, his features appear sharper and the relaxed idol from the earlier photographs gives way to a figure who looks as though he belongs at the center of a dark fantasy drama.
It is easy to understand why Korean fans reached for one particular nickname: “Northern Duke.”
What Does “Northern Duke” Mean?
The Korean term bukbu daegong, commonly translated as “Northern Duke” or “Grand Duke of the North,” comes from a familiar character archetype in Korean romance-fantasy web novels and webtoons.
He is usually tall, powerful and intimidating, dressed in dark clothing and stationed in a cold northern territory. He appears emotionally distant to most people, but the story gradually reveals a softer and more loyal side reserved for those closest to him.
The nickname has become a playful way of describing celebrities whose appearance matches that fictional image. A long black coat, strong silhouette, sharp expression and almost aristocratic bearing are usually enough to inspire the comparison.
San checks every box in the new editorial.
Long coats emphasize his proportions, while the all-black styling gives him the imposing presence associated with the archetype. The playful photographs matter just as much, however, because the classic Northern Duke is never only cold. His appeal depends on the contrast between his intimidating exterior and hidden warmth.
That duality also mirrors San’s public image. Onstage, he is known for explosive facial expressions and physically demanding performances. Away from a performance, fans frequently encounter a much gentler and more affectionate personality.
Fashion Is Becoming Another Stage for San
San’s physicality has always been central to his work in ATEEZ.
His dancing does not simply follow choreography. He uses posture, facial expression and small changes in tension to embody a song’s character. The same skills translate naturally into fashion photography, where a jacket or pose must communicate something without movement or dialogue.
In the Dazed shoot, San does more than model different outfits. He changes the character of each one.

Dolce & Gabbana officially named San a global ambassador in October 2025, describing him as a South Korean singer and dancer from ATEEZ. San said at the time that he was proud to begin the partnership and looked forward to creating meaningful moments with the house.
He has since appeared in the brand’s Fall/Winter 2026 campaign photographed by Steven Meisel, placing him within a fashion lineage shaped by one of the industry’s most influential photographers.
The Nickname Has Followed Him Beyond the Photoshoot
“ Northern Duke” was already following San before the Dazed editorial appeared.
Korean media used the description for his appearance at the 2026 SBS Gayo Daejeon Summer blue carpet in August. It surfaced again when he attended the K World Dream Awards later that month, showing that the nickname has become connected to his broader visual identity rather than one particular outfit.
The new photographs refine that image by showing it is not dependent on elaborate fantasy styling. San can create the same commanding effect with modern tailoring, wet hair and a controlled expression.
That makes the editorial especially effective. It does not dress him as a fictional duke. It lets his proportions, expressions and presence evoke the character on their own.
From “BAD” to High Fashion
The shoot arrives as ATEEZ continues activities connected to “BAD,” released in June.
San drew particular attention during the group’s performances through his sharp expressions and dramatic control of the choreography. Fan-recorded clips circulated widely, reinforcing his reputation as a performer whose impact can be understood even through a short vertical video.
His fashion work offers a quieter version of that same intensity.
Onstage, San commands attention through movement. In the Dazed photographs, he achieves it by becoming completely still. The tools are different, but the result is similar: the viewer’s eyes naturally move toward him.
That may be the most compelling part of San’s rise as a fashion figure. His physical presence first became famous through performance, but it is no longer confined to choreography. Luxury campaigns and magazine editorials are giving him new spaces in which to use it.
The “Northern Duke” description may have started as a fun fandom comparison, but this shoot shows why it has lasted. San does not merely look powerful in dark clothing.
