Veteran actors Yoo Ji-tae and Lee Min-jung are teaming up in a gripping new crime thriller.
TVING has officially confirmed in a phone call with Dispatch that its original series “Villains” will premiere on December 18, 2025, bringing a high-stakes battle of deception and revenge to the screen.

A Battle Between Masterminds

“Villains” revolves around the intense confrontation between a criminal mastermind and a corrupt detective, both in pursuit of a mysterious and highly sophisticated counterfeit bill known as the ‘Supernote.’

Yoo Ji-tae takes on the role of the enigmatic J, a meticulous and intelligent criminal planner with unclear motives. His every move is calculated, and his cold charisma drives much of the series’ suspense.

Lee Min-jung portrays Han Soo-hyun, a skilled counterfeiting artist whose life unravels after becoming entangled in J’s project. Consumed by vengeance and guilt, she becomes both predator and prey in a world where morality blurs into crime.

A Star-Studded Cast and High-Stakes Tension

The ensemble cast includes Kwak Do-won, who plays Jang Joong-hyuk, a corrupt detective deeply involved in money and power struggles, and Lee Beom-soo, cast as Cha Ki-tae, a former NIS financial crimes task force leader determined to take down J.

Originally slated for a 2023 release, the drama faced delays following internal scheduling adjustments. Despite speculation, a TVING representative clarified: “The postponement was not due to any specific controversy. It was part of a broader rescheduling process for upcoming original content.

A Deep Dive Into Crime and Revenge

With its dark visual palette, morally ambiguous characters, and a plot weaving together intelligence, betrayal, and obsession, “Villains” aims to deliver a sophisticated crime narrative rarely seen in Korean drama.

As the cat-and-mouse chase intensifies, Yoo Ji-tae’s chilling composure and Lee Min-jung’s emotional depth are expected to ignite powerful chemistry on screen — promising a finale that lingers long after the credits roll.

Editor’s Insight — Why ‘Villains’ Reflects a Shift Toward Darker, Character-Driven K-Dramas

‘Villains’ signals a growing shift in Korean dramas toward morally complex, character-driven thrillers that prioritize psychological tension over clear-cut heroes and villains. What makes this project particularly compelling is its focus on dual perspectives a criminal mastermind and a compromised system represented by a corrupt detective blurring traditional narrative boundaries. Casting Yoo Ji-tae and Lee Min-jung further reinforces this direction, as both actors bring a level of gravitas that suits layered, internal conflict rather than surface-level action. In today’s global streaming environment, where audiences are drawn to nuanced anti-heroes and intricate plots, ‘Villains’ positions itself as a series designed not just for domestic viewers, but for international audiences seeking darker, more sophisticated storytelling.
