Actor Hyun Bin was seen overcome with emotion as he paid his final respects to the late Ahn Sung-ki, widely regarded as Korea’s “national actor.”

On January 9, Hyun Bin attended the funeral Mass and film community memorial service held at Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, quietly standing alongside fellow actors to honor the life and legacy of a towering figure in Korean cinema.

A Somber Farewell at Myeongdong Cathedral

The late Ahn Sung-ki, a devout Catholic during his lifetime, was laid to rest following a funeral Mass and an official memorial organized by the Korean film community. Senior and junior actors alike gathered to escort him on his final journey, their faces marked by grief and respect.

Hyun Bin appeared with visibly reddened eyes and a worn expression, suggesting he had been in tears during the service. His subdued demeanor conveyed the deep loss felt by a younger generation bidding farewell to a mentor and role model.

Among those present were actors Jung Joon-ho, Byun Yo-han, and Oh Ji-ho, all of whom joined the Mass and memorial in silence, sharing the collective sorrow of the film industry.

A Nation Mourns a Cinematic Icon

Ahn Sung-ki passed away after complications following a cardiac arrest at his home, having previously battled blood cancer. Despite intensive treatment in the ICU, he died peacefully surrounded by his family.

The South Korean government posthumously awarded him the Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit, the highest cultural honor in the country—his third cultural medal—recognizing his unparalleled contribution to Korean film.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism praised Ahn as an actor who transcended generations, noting that he symbolized the popular and industrial growth of Korean cinema from the 1990s through the 2000s, and helped expand its social and cultural reach.

A Quiet Tribute From a Grateful Junior

Hyun Bin’s tearful presence at the service stood as a quiet but powerful tribute—one actor honoring another not with words, but with sincerity and respect. As Korea bids farewell to a cinematic giant, the image of younger stars standing in mourning underscores the enduring legacy Ahn Sung-ki leaves behind.

His films may continue to speak for him, but on this day, it was the silent tears of those he inspired that told his story best.
