A Blockbuster Set After the Fall of Goguryeo

Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan is set in 668 AD, immediately following the fall of Goguryeo. The story unfolds in Yodong Fortress, once a key Goguryeo stronghold, where cinematic imagination meets historical tragedy. The film centers on a man who loses his memory and is reduced to slavery, only to enter a brutal gladiatorial tournament centered around a legendary northern sword said to embody hope amid chaos.

The film aims to portray Goguryeo-era sword combat on an unprecedented scale, a subject rarely explored in Korean cinema, combining raw action with mythic storytelling.

A Gladiator Arena of Northern Tribes

A major highlight of the film is its massive circular arena set in Yodong, where warriors from 16 northern tribes including Khitan, Malgal, and Göktürk clans gather for a life-or-death sword tournament. Each tribe brings its own fighting style, tactics, and philosophy, resulting in intense close-combat battles designed to deliver visceral impact and cinematic catharsis.

The survival-driven clashes are expected to showcase a level of physicality and realism rarely seen in Korean historical films.

Park Bo-gum’s Most Radical Transformation Yet

Park Bo-gum takes on the role of Chilseong, a warrior who has lost his memories and survives as a slave gladiator. His journey spans from desperate survival to awakening as the legendary “Red Wolf,” a symbol of resistance and hope.

The role marks Park Bo-gum’s boldest transformation to date, demanding relentless physical action and emotional depth as the character evolves into a hero shaped by loss, violence, and destiny.

Joo Won as the Cold-Blooded Rival Warrior

Standing opposite Chilseong is Gyepil Haryeok, portrayed by Joo Won. Representing the Göktürk forces, Gyepil Haryeok is a calm, lethal warrior who enters the tournament with calculated precision. His rivalry with Chilseong forms the film’s central conflict.

Joo Won is set to deliver high-difficulty action sequences using dual swords, intensifying the tension and creating a sharp contrast between the two warriors’ fighting philosophies.

Supporting Cast Strengthens the Epic Scale

Jung Jae-young plays Heuksugang, the leader of the Goguryeo restoration army who secretly works to revive the fallen kingdom. As Chilseong’s mentor, he represents both wisdom and unyielding resolve.

Lee Sun-bin appears as Maya, a mysterious and formidable member of the resistance, bringing both action and intrigue to the narrative. Kim Hyung-seo joins as Injeong, Heuksugang’s daughter, adding emotional layers and fresh energy to the story.

Director Kim Han-min on the Film’s Vision

Director Kim Han-min explained that while War of the Arrows showcased the speed and spirit of the bow, Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan aims to capture the heavy, cutting force of the sword during a turbulent era.

He described the film as a collision between personal destiny and historical pain, emphasizing that it is not merely about combat, but about identity, loss, and purpose. With Goguryeo and swordsmanship as its core motifs, the director expressed confidence that the film will introduce a new kind of Korean action hero to audiences across Asia and beyond.

With its ambitious scale, rare historical focus, and high-profile cast, Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Korean action films of the coming years.
