EXO has officially returned, reaffirming its identity and presence with the release of its eighth full length album ‘REVERXE’ and title track ‘Crown.’ Three years after their last group album, the veteran K-pop act re-enters the spotlight with a sound and message rooted firmly in what made EXO a defining force in the genre.
Released on January 19, ‘REVERXE’ marks EXO’s first full group comeback since completing military service. The album features nine tracks, led by ‘Crown,’ a high intensity performance piece that leans unapologetically into SM Entertainment’s signature SMP (SM Music Performance) style. Built on Atlanta trap drums, heavy metal guitar riffs, and layered EDM synths, the song delivers a forceful sonic statement paired with EXO’s trademark vocal weight.

‘Crown’: Familiar Language, Clear Resolve
Lyrically, ‘Crown’ compares a precious presence to a crown something to be protected at all costs. The message is direct and resolute: this is what we value, and we will guard it until the end. The choreography reinforces that theme, featuring a key point move that mimics placing a crown atop one’s head, while the music video incorporates elemental imagery such as fire, water, and wind a visual callback to EXO’s long-running superpower-based universe.
Critics have described the album’s direction as a deliberate choice of familiarity. Rather than pursuing experimentation, EXO opted for stability and clarity. Music critic Park Hee-ah noted that the album adheres closely to classic SMP formulas, offering longtime fans a sense of reassurance rather than surprise. The decision appears intentional: after a prolonged hiatus, EXO prioritized reaffirming who they are.
A Six Member Comeback That Felt Complete
This comeback arrives under close scrutiny. With Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin absent from group promotions due to contractual circumstances, concerns lingered about whether EXO’s impact would be diluted. However, performances told a different story.
At the 2025 Melon Music Awards, where EXO returned to the stage after eight years, the group delivered a commanding medley of hits including ‘Growl,’ ‘Wolf,’ ‘Monster,’ and ‘Love Shot,’ alongside new track ‘Back It Up.’ According to OTT platform Wavve, the moment EXO appeared on stage marked the highest concurrent viewership of the broadcast a clear indicator of enduring public interest.
A Group That Defined an Era And Still Matters
Debuting in 2012, EXO sparked a nationwide phenomenon with ‘Growl’ in 2013 and went on to dominate the mid-2010s with a string of hits such as ‘Call Me Baby’ and ‘Love Me Right.’ Alongside BTS and Wanna One, they were once dubbed “EXO-BANG-WAN,” shorthand for the era’s most influential boy groups.
