Song Hye-kyo and Gong Yoo are set to lead the upcoming Netflix original series ‘Tantara,’ written by renowned screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung and directed by Lee Yoon-jung, with a global release scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
The series was introduced on January 21 during Netflix’s ‘Next on Netflix 2026 Korea’ showcase held in Seoul, where it was highlighted as one of the platform’s most anticipated Korean originals under the theme of “immersive storytelling.”

A High-Profile Creative Reunion
‘Tantara’ brings together a creative lineup widely regarded as one of the strongest in Korean drama history. Song Hye-kyo reunites with Noh Hee-kyung for the third time, following their acclaimed collaborations on ‘Worlds Within’ and ‘That Winter, the Wind Blows.’ The project also marks Gong Yoo’s reunion with director Lee Yoon-jung, nearly two decades after their iconic work on ‘Coffee Prince.’ Netflix Korea content executive Kang Dong-han described the project as “a powerful meeting of names that alone generate excitement,” emphasizing the emotional weight and depth the series aims to deliver.
A Story of Ambition, Friendship, and Time
Set against the backdrop of Korea’s entertainment industry from the 1960s through the 1980s, ‘Tantara’ follows individuals who start with nothing but dream relentlessly of success, throwing themselves fully into ambition, desire, and survival.
Song Hye-kyo plays Min-ja, a woman who enters the music industry with determination but little to rely on. Gong Yoo stars as Dong-gu, Min-ja’s childhood friend who grows up alongside her, sharing formative years that shape both their bond and their diverging paths. The series traces how time, ambition, and changing circumstances redefine relationships and personal identity.
Ensemble Cast and Thematic Focus
In addition to the two leads, the drama features a notable supporting cast including Seolhyun, Cha Seung-won, and Lee Ha-nui. According to Netflix, the series explores “human desire, emotional intensity, and the density of life,” focusing on character-driven narratives rather than spectacle. Rather than fast paced plot twists, ‘Tantara’ is expected to lean into gradual emotional buildup, reflective storytelling, and nuanced performances hallmarks of Noh Hee-kyung’s writing.
What’s Next
With its period setting, acclaimed creative team, and two of Korea’s most recognizable actors at the center, ‘Tantara’ is positioned as a prestige drama aimed at both domestic and global audiences.
