A song choice was enough to send IU into the center of an online debate and then an account mix-up created a second controversy that never actually happened.
On August 6, the singer and actress returned to her personal Instagram with a large collection of recent photos, writing messages including “Hello, long time no see” and “I’m living diligently.” The update included casual selfies, behind the scenes moments and photos from her everyday life.
But the photographs were soon overshadowed by the music attached to the post. IU selected “Living the Carefree Life” (별일 없이 산다), a 2009 song by Korean indie band Kiha & The Faces. Spotify lists that English title for the track.
The reason it became news had little to do with the song itself: the band was fronted by Jang Ki-ha, IU’s former boyfriend.
Why one background song became a relationship story
IU and Jang publicly confirmed their relationship in 2015 after first meeting through Jang’s radio program, and they announced their breakup in 2017.
Nearly a decade later, the relationship is long over.
Still, IU’s song selection attracted renewed attention because Jang is now publicly dating actress Yoon Ga-i. Their agencies confirmed the relationship in June, saying the two were seeing each other with positive feelings. IU also recently ended her public relationship with actor Lee Jong-suk. Their agencies confirmed on July 10 that the pair had separated and would continue supporting each other as professional colleagues.
That timing encouraged some social media users to search for hidden meaning in what otherwise could simply have been a song IU wanted to use.
There is currently no evidence that IU intended the selection as a message to Jang, Yoon or anyone else.
Fans were split: “It’s just a song” vs. “Why that song?”
Reaction quickly divided into two broad camps.
Some users questioned whether choosing a former partner’s music was unnecessary now that Jang is in another public relationship. Others argued that expecting people to permanently avoid music created by former partners—especially almost 10 years after a breakup—was excessive.
Korean reports documented both responses, with fans describing the choice as surprisingly “cool” while others insisted that “a song is just a song.”
International discussion followed a similar pattern. One Reddit thread characterized IU as “unbothered,” while commenters debated whether the choice crossed a line or whether people were simply reading too much into an Instagram soundtrack.
The reaction may say more about celebrity culture than it does about IU.
When a star has publicly dated other famous people, an ordinary playlist choice can suddenly be interpreted as a relationship update—even when the person involved has offered no such explanation.
Then came the “deleted post” rumor
The story took another turn when claims began circulating that IU had removed the Instagram update after receiving criticism.
That would have created an easy narrative: celebrity posts ex-boyfriend’s song, backlash follows, celebrity deletes post.
Except the deletion reportedly never happened.
The confusion appears to have come from the fact that IU has more than one Instagram presence. Some users checked an official account managed for professional activities, did not see the post there and concluded that it had been deleted.
The photos had actually been uploaded through IU’s personal account.
The August 6 photo set was also independently archived online as an Instagram update containing dozens of images, supporting that it was a substantial personal post rather than an official promotional upload.
According to the updated Korean report supplied for this story, the original personal post remained visible as of the afternoon of August 7.
In other words, the “deletion controversy” was itself based on a misunderstanding.
A good example of how celebrity rumors mutate online
The episode followed a familiar social-media pattern.
First came a real event: IU used Jang Ki-ha’s song.
Then came interpretation: perhaps the choice meant something about their past relationship. Then came judgment: some users decided it was inappropriate, while others defended her. Finally came an entirely new claim that IU had deleted the post because of the backlash.
Each stage moved further away from the only fact that could actually be confirmed: IU chose a song for an Instagram post. Nothing publicly released by IU establishes why she selected it.
That distinction matters because entertainment stories can quickly turn speculation into apparent fact simply through repetition.
IU has otherwise been keeping a lower profile
The Instagram update also drew attention because IU has recently adjusted some of her professional plans.
EDAM Entertainment announced in July that her planned September concert schedule and sixth studio album would be postponed after symptoms of her chronic patulous Eustachian tube condition worsened. The agency emphasized that her condition was not seriously disrupting everyday life but said performing concerts would be difficult while she recovered.
That made the casual August photos a welcome update for fans who had been waiting to hear from her.
Yet instead of the conversation remaining about IU’s everyday life, a single background track ended up dominating headlines.
Sometimes a song really may just be a song
The irony of the controversy is that the title itself Living the Carefree Life could easily describe the approach many fans thought IU was taking.
Nearly 10 years have passed since her relationship with Jang ended. Both have continued their careers and personal lives, and Jang is now openly in another relationship. There is no verified indication that IU’s Instagram choice was intended to interfere with that relationship or comment on her own recent breakup.
And despite claims that criticism forced her to retreat, the supposed “deleted post ending” did not materialize.
The post stayed.
The rumor disappeared.
