IVE Suit Up as Superheroes for 5th Mini Album ‘Looks Can Kill’

Starship’s biggest girl group trades Cupid and magical-girl fantasy for a cinematic “Girl Hero” universe, teasing a full movie-style rollout before the Oct. 19 pre-release.

A cookie in one hand, An Yu-jin launches into the sky, soaring across a desert and a snow-capped mountain range before touching down at the “Hero IVE Training Center.” It plays like the cold open of a blockbuster and that’s precisely the point. IVE isn’t just releasing an album. They’re launching a cinematic universe.

The six-member juggernaut has officially entered comeback countdown mode, and they’re doing it with some of the most ambitious concept storytelling of their career. On October 6, Starship Entertainment dropped a 1-minute, 33-second video titled POST CREDIT SCENE: GIRL HERO across IVE‘s social channels a teaser engineered to look and feel like a film opening, with each member stepping into a fully-realized superhero alter ego.

Meet the Girl Heroes

The reveal gave every member her own costumed identity, color-coded and comic-book styled: Jang Won-young as “Bat Pink,” Leeseo as “Spider Red,” Rei as “Jean Yellow,” Gaeul as “Wonder Green,” Liz as “Super Blue,” and An Yu-jin as “Captain Purple.” The names wink knowingly at the Western superhero canon Batman, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Captain America repackaged through IVE’s signature high-gloss aesthetic.

It’s a clever bit of worldbuilding. Rather than one-off visuals, Starship has framed Looks Can Kill as an IVE-style spin-off, with the group transforming into six distinct heroes who introduce a new character and universe. The rollout extends the teaser into fully branded promotional content segments like “Hero Training Center: Hero Comics” and “Looks Can Kill BTS” promise a layered, multimedia campaign rather than a conventional round of concept photos.

A New Chapter in IVE’s Concept Playbook

What makes this comeback notable isn’t just the superhero gloss it’s where it sits in IVE’s creative evolution. The “Girl Hero” concept is explicitly billed as an “Another Ego,” the next step after the group’s earlier “Cupid” and “magical girl” eras. Since debuting under Starship in December 2021, IVE has built a brand on self-assured, almost mythological self-regard songs like “Love Dive,” “After Like,” and “I AM” turned narcissism-as-empowerment into a globally resonant pop identity. “After Like” alone became their first million-certified album, moving over 1.7 million copies.

Seen in that light, “Girl Hero” is less a departure than a logical escalation. If IVE’s earlier concepts framed the members as objects of desire and self-love, this one frames them as forces of nature heroines whose very presence, as Starship puts it, “delivers a fatal blow by mere existence.” The album title says the quiet part out loud: Looks Can Kill. It’s the perfect thesis for a group that has always treated confidence as its superpower.

The Music Behind the Mythology

The spectacle is backed by substance. The six-track mini album draws on a lineup of top-tier domestic and international songwriters, with reported contributors spanning Korean hip-hop veteran Gaeko to Swedish pop hitmaker Zara Larsson. Alongside the title track, the record features “Mirror Mirror,” “SNAKESKIN,” “CRUMBS,” “Girls Girls Girls,” and “Glow Motion.”

Crucially, this isn’t an album handed to the members fully formed. Gaeul, Rei, and Liz each participated in the songwriting a continuation of IVE’s gradual move toward creative ownership, adding what the group describes as its own musical color. For a quartet of fourth-generation acts increasingly judged on artistry rather than just visuals, that participation matters. It signals a group maturing into co-authors of their own narrative, not merely performers of it.

What to Watch For

The campaign builds in two stages: IVE will pre-release the title track “Looks Can Kill” on October 19, followed by the full fifth mini album of the same name on October 26.

The real test will be whether the music lands with the same force as the mythology. IVE has rarely stumbled on that front their track record of viral, chart-dominating singles is among the most consistent in modern K-pop. But the “Girl Hero” rollout raises the stakes by promising a full narrative universe, not just a comeback. If the songs match the ambition of the storytelling, Looks Can Kill could be the moment IVE stops borrowing from the superhero playbook and starts writing one of their own.
